Climate impact from different products

Life-cycle analyses shows that different types of products and services, have their largest impact on climate during the various stages in the life cycles. Products with a long life and products that consume much energy usually have their biggest impact on the environment during the use phase (see the example with the vacuum cleaner), while other products have their greatest impact on the environment during the production phase. That is usually the case in food production (see the example of milk production).

Life cycle analyses are often a necessary tool to identify the areas where the most effective measures can be made to reduce the environmental impact of a product.

Climate friendly products

Climate friendly or "climate neutral" products, typically takes account the climate impacts that occur throughout the product life cycle, where all life cycle phases included. It is important that such a claim that a product is "climate neutral" is based on credible estimates of greenhouse gas emissions in a global perspective. If some parts of the product life cycle are excluded from the calculations, it should be those that to a lesser extent contribute to emissions of greenhouse gases. It should also be described and justified.
